Academic Requirements.

Classical Civilizations Minor (21 credit hours)

Twenty-one credit hours of course work are required.
All students must take the following TWO classes:

  • HIST 3130 Greek History (3)
  • HIST 3150 Roman History (3)
They must take ONE of the following courses in ancient archaeology:
  • HIST/ARTH 3110 Ancient Near East (3)
  • ANTH 1030 World Archaeology (3)
They must take ONE of the following courses in ancient literature and language:
  • CLAS/HIST 1120 Building English Vocabulary: Latin & Greek Elements in English (3)
  • CLAS 3170 Descent and Return: Ancient Views of Hades and the Afterlife (3)
  • CLAS/RELS/HIST 3210 Classical Mythology (3)
They must take ONE of the following courses in ancient art and drama:
  • ARTH 3610 Classical Art History: Greece and Rome (3)
  • CLAS/HIST 3160 Classical Drama and Society (3)
They must take ONE of the following courses in ancient thought and intellectual history:
  • HIST 4350 Greek Intellectual History(3)
  • POLS 4310 History of Political Thought I (3)
  • PHIL 3100 Ancient Philosophy (3)

The remaining 3 credits are elective and may include any of the courses listed above.

Latin Teaching Minor (21 credit hours)

    All students must take the following classes:
  • HIST 3150 Roman History (3)
  • LATN 3100 Intermediate Latin Prose (3)
  • LATN 3130 Intermediate Latin Poetry (3)
  • LATN 4100 Advanced Latin Readings (3)
  • LATN 4860 Latin Pedagogy (3)
  • CLAS/HIST 1120 Building English Vocabulary (3)

The remaining 3 credits must be taken in upper-division Latin. Students may fulfill this requirement either by taking LATN 4100 a second time (provided a different author is studied) or by taking 3 credits of LATN 4930 (Directed Readings in Latin Poetry and Prose Authors). In order to receive teaching certification in Latin, students must also pass the Latin PRAXIS exam, as well as successfully complete the STEP (Secondary Teacher Education Program) as part of their major.

Latin Language Minor (13 credit hours)

    All students must complete:
  • HIST 3150 Roman History (3), and
  • 7 credits of upper-division (3000-4000 level) courses in the Latin language.
    They must also complete one of the following courses:
  • ARTH 3610 Classical Art History: Greece and Rome (3)
  • CLAS/HIST 1120 Building English Vocabulary: Latin and Greek Elements in English (3)
  • CLAS 3160 Classical Drama and Society (3)
  • CLAS 3170 Descent and Return: Ancient Views of Hades and the Afterlife
  • CLAS/RELS/HIST 3210 Classical Mythology (3)

Greek Language Minor (13 credit hours)

    All students must complete:
  • HIST 3130 Greek History (3), and
  • 7 credits of upper-division (3000-4000 level) courses in classical Greek language.
    They must also complete ONE of the following courses:
  • ART 3610 Classical Art History: Greece and Rome (3)
  • CLAS/HIST 1120 Building English Vocabulary: Latin and Greek Elements in English (3)
  • CLAS 3160 Classical Drama and Society (3)
  • CLAS 3170 Descent and Return: Ancient Views of Hades and the Afterlife
